Scope and Objectives

The goal of this project is to create a suite of smartphone based teaching aids to improve student learning and assist teachers in conducting large classes. This includes 1) a bring-your-own-device cheating-free examination system to conduct quizzes, 2) a clicker system to conduct quick polls 3) a file distribution system that permits a teacher to share files with the class, 4) a doubts clearing system that permits a teacher to prioritize and address students' doubts, and 5) a smart mic app that provides microphone functionality to students. An important goal is to build the aids such that they scale well.

Deliverables

As given in the original proposal, we will deliver the following at the end of the project: Software modules for the five applications, including client-side apps and server-side implementations. SAFE Clicker File sharing Doubts clearing app Mic app Scalable WiFi AP module for ready deployment of our apps in classrooms/conferences. Design documentation and results from field trials for each of the applications.

Scientific Output

We have progressed along the SAFE app very well. The main achievements in this direction include the successful field trial of SAFE app done in the following settings: In the month of Dec-2017, SAFE was used for daily quizzes in a month-long workshop for faculty from various colleges Subsequent to the above, several colleges/institutes have used SAFE v1 for their exams this last semester: IIT-Kanpur, IIIT-G, K.J.Somaiya College, Sree Chitra College of Engg., NMIMS, Orchid College of Engg., AGPIT, ZEAL, RIT, VSSUT, Theem College of Engg. In Feb-2018, Pratham Education Foundation (http://www.pratham.org/) used for skill training exams SAFE has also been used by a company Mojo Networks (https://www.mojonetworks.com/) for placement tests SAFE v1 was used to conduct quizzes, lab-exams, and also part of an end-sem exam in IIT-Bombay as well as IIT-Dharwad
