Project Title
Development of an Open Source Solidification/Melting Platform – OpenSol

Web Abstract
Almost all manufactured components both metallic and non-metallic materials are processed from their liquid state. The end properties in solidified products are linked with the structure and defects generated during the progress of solidification. Physical phenomena that govern the casting and solidification processes encompass coupled fluid, heat and mass transfer phenomena, and formation of chemical heterogeneities and microstructures. Commercial softwares are inflexible in linking with lower length scale models. The project aims to develop fully validated open source software (OpenSol) for casting and solidification capable of handling complex physical processes of solidification using sophisticated models. The software can be useful to the Indian manufacturing industries and strategic sectors for improving the design, performance and cost competitiveness of their products. The capability of the software/platform will be demonstrated by simulating few solidification based processes and through use of experiments planned as a part of this project.
