Scope and Objectives

1. Selection of microalgal and/ or cyanobacterial strains capable of degradation of toxic chemicals and formation of algal consortium consisting of suitable strains for treatment of wastewater.
2. Characterization of wastewater collected from different units in coke-oven wastewater treatment plant.
3. Parametric optimization of removal conditions of toxic chemicals from real effluent using algal consortium and development of photobioreactor in laboratory scale. Design of microalgal treatment systems and onsite treatment of wastewater in pilot scale.
4. Study of production of lipid from algal biomass grown in wastewater aiming at the generation of biofuel.

Deliverables

Expected to be delivered towards the end of the project.

Scientific Output

1. Algal and bacterial samples have been collected and identified from contaminated site
2. They are found to be resistant to pollutants present in simulated coke-oven wastewater.

Results and outcome till date
