Web Abstract

Long-range predictability of Indian summer monsoon rainfall depends how it responds to global sea surface temperature. However, the known SST variabilities influencing the monsoon explain only a small fraction if its interannual variabilty. Here, we propose to design a mechanism that uses modes of global sea surface temperature for the prediction of monsoon rainfall over India. While such method will compliment the previous knowledge of dependance of rainfall on sea surface temperature, it will also discover hetherto unexplored teleconnections.
